The Thonigala stone inscription, carved by King Kirthi Sri Meghawarna, through his Minister Deva, considered to be written between the 4 - 5 centuries A.D. The inscription is situated on the Vavuniya-Horowpothana road is of historical and linguistic importance.

It contains information on the first banking and trading system and the barter system, which is the great evidence available proving the existence of a regional banking system in Sri Lanka.
