The archaeological and historical heritage of Salawa Rajamaha Viharaya

               The king “Walagamba” who was kingdom in Anuradhapuraya protect the hostile aggress, he built many temple in here. This “Salawa Viharaya” is situated in Kegalle district Paranakuru Koralaya note in history.

                According to “Maha Vanshaya” in that time the elder person name “Kuththakkula Maha Tissa” was procure protection for the king “Walagamba”. His monastery was sitiated in Salawa. This “Salawa Viharaya” is get the important place in period of Kandy before the period of Anuradhapura. That is the period of king “Kirthi Sri Rajasingha”. This temple was important in this period because of two reasons. Videlicet the paintings inside of the temple and the monk  “Morathota Dammakkanda” who was lived in here.

                This is a crypt temple divided into three parts named as “Vihara geya Uda Viharaya”, “Palle Viharaya” and “Mada Viharaya”. Among the these temple the “Mada Viharaya” has beautiful dragon pandol. Inside of the temple there is a 18 cubit Buddha statue and with statue of “Dagasau”. Among this there is statue of “Maethri Buddha”. The walls of the temple beautiful with “Suvesivewaranaya” and ”Sathsatiya” paintings. There is a grant on the rock which was the king “Kirthi Sri Rajasingha” written about villages it is between of the “Palle Viharaya” and “Mada Viharaya”. According to this grant this temple has lots of lands.

 

              Among the historical place in the Kegalle district this “Salawa Viharaya” is valuable for the Buddhist people and the people who like to know old paintings.
