The archaeological and historical heritage of Lenawara Rajamaha Viharaya

                   This “Lenwara Rajamaha Viharaya” one of the temple is situated in Avessawella area. This temple is situated in Colombo-Avessawella road and go 2kms to Kosgama junction. This temple is in the Ben. It is a crypt temple. this Ben also called “Asmadala Gala” and there are 100 stairs to climb here. According to book  “Lanka Vistharaya” this Ben is  212 feet high.

                   There are limit area for the temple compound. Aside of the compound there is caion and the bodhi tree is on the declivity 6 feet high. Inside of the crypt there are” Sathapena Pilimaya” and “Hiti Pilimaya”. The king “Seethawaka Rajasingha” named ‘Hanwalla’ Krall is in bellow of the Ben. In subway of this “Asmadala Gala” there was a treasure note in book named “Wadula”. The British ambassador Mr. John Fiybers was visit in this “Asmadala Gala” in 1763 noted in books. The bens is attending to the sick and that reason the “Sathapena Pilimaya” is crack and going pop.

 

                 We can identify this “Lenwara Rajamaha Viharaya” is the place attention for archaeologist officer to protect this historical place.
