Description

Kithalpe Raja maha Viharaya is situated close by the road to Pallebowala. In the premises there are an image house, a preaching hall, poyage ,a bodhi and avasage. All these constructions have been done recently and are modernized. The tooth relic which was kept here and there for safety at Hanguranketha area in accordance with the order of the King of Kandy (Mahanuwara) , had been kept in Kithulpe Rajamaha Viharaya, too, in 1803 A.D. Therefore it shows a connection to the Kandyan period. When observe carefully, around the vihara premises, there has been appearing some artifacts like roof tiles potsherds, and granite columns which link this vihara up to Anuradhapura period. There is a cave too, close to this vihara and some where with the evidence on the era of BC. There are two image-houses here. The new one has been built in about 1950
